The romantic, gold-and-marble castle of Herrenchiemsee was built to rival Louis XIV’s Palace of Versailles. Dominating the small island of Herreninsel, on Lake Chiemsee, it’s the biggest of several famous castles of Ludwig II., the 19th century king who funded Wagner’s operas and put Bavaria on the map.
The Chiemsee is a favorite spot for holiday-makers. Travelers can cruise to resorts all around the lake, which is Bavaria’s largest. Also worth visiting is Fraueninsel, or the ‘Women’s Island’, which has a tiny Benedictine abbey and hosts a Christmas market in winter.
